"Several told me how they were going through rough times years ago, and how they bought one of my pieces and wore it every day. ey told me it brought them courage or strength, or helped them get through it. ey just wanted to thank me, and that made my heart so happy," she said. Born in Australia, her parents were creative, artistic, colorful and free-spirited. "ey were crazy hippie drop- outs who lived on a banana plantation," she said, with a laugh. "Dad was from California. He sold screen-printed surfing shorts and t-shirts from a shop on the Byron Bay beach in New South Wales for 30 years and was a huge surfer," she recalled. "He tried to teach me surfing, but I was pathetic. I've never been athletic - I was more into being creative, and I've been surrounded by creative people all my life." Spirit's mother was born in the Philippines and raised in Guam. e couple had a health food restaurant and sailed around the world before settling in Australia, she said. Spirit is her given name. "My parents waited two weeks to finally decide on it. ey wanted to make sure it fit me.
