For a group of 15 girls and their •ve coaches at Sawyer Road Elementary, a Title One school in Marietta, the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Presented by Assurant 5K on April 27 at Cheney Stadium in Atlanta was about strength, determination and perseverance. ‰e team has been a part of the nationally- recognized GOTR program for three years. ‰ey not only learn about •tness, but also leadership, friendship and community service. ‰e program prepares them for a 5K race. ‰is year, the team had a season of illnesses and challenges. One coach is battling cervical cancer, one coach is wearing a leg cast, a student is in remission from brain cancer and another student is recovering aŒer being in ICU following a vehicle accident. GOTR loaned Trinity Miles a jogging stroller and her mom, Diamond Hazel, wearing a GOTR superhero cape and unicorn headband, pushed her to the •nish line. "‰is year was extra special," said Tamie Clark, a Sawyer Road Elementary teacher and GOTR coach. "‰ere were tears at the •nish line, tears for meeting personal goals and overcoming obstacles.
